TEHRAN – Researchers of Research Institute of Petroleum Industry have managed to remove benzene from gasoline.

Amir Nasser Ahmadi noted that the benzene content of gasoline has poses a major environmental challenge during the past years.

“Benzene is produced in the process of gasoline production. Therefore, Chemistry and Petrochemical Research Center of Research Institute of Petroleum Industry has implemented a successful project for removing benzene from gasoline through pervaporation.

Ahmadi pointed out that according to international standards, benzene content of gasoline should not surpass one percent, while the figure is about 3-5 percent for Iran.

He noted that pervaporation is superior to ordinary methods (evaporation) for separating organic compounds.

The official stated that pervaporation system has been designed with a daily capacity of five kilograms and has reduced benzene content of gasoline by more than 65 percent of the current figure (3-5 percent).

He said the project has been implemented on the request of the National Iranian Oil Company.
